Sequence One

BIG IDEA:​ Diversity and Inclusion

Lesson Title:​ Art Apparel Design

Grade level:​ 7th & 8th

Lesson Length (days or hours):​ 7 days, 10 hours

Lesson description: Students will learn how to make personalized, identity-based designs to screen print with a resist on a plastic embroidery hoop or cut it out of freezer paper, print it onto a fabric patch and then sew the patch onto a piece of clothing, fabric or tote bag.
Students will explore parts of their identities and relate it to their pieces through representational imagery and art making

Humanity Concepts & Art concepts: ​Machine sewing – creative stitching, applique, upcycling.
Exploration of technology to transform images and ideas.
Innovative artworks using the principles of design­.
Identity based artwork

Enduring understandings:​ Students will learn how to create identity-based artworks.
Students will design and create works of art using images, words and symbols that illustrate personal community or culture.

Students can identify multiple points of view represented through artistic expression. 

Critical content: 
Students will learn how to make personalized, identity-based designs to screen print with a resist on a premade screen, print it onto a fabric patch and then sew the patch onto a piece of clothing, fabric or tote bag. 

Students will learn how to express parts of their identities through artistic practice.

Key Skills: 
Students will design and create works of art using images, words and symbols that illustrate personal community or culture.
Students establish and link background knowledge to what they create.

Sequence Three

BIG IDEA: Diversity, community, inclusion​

Lesson Title:​ Project Terraform (3D printed houses and ceramic environments)

Grade level:​ 7th and 8th graders

Lesson Length: (days or hours):​ 7 days, 10 hours

Lesson description: Students will 3D model and print a house and then create a ceramic environment to set the house in.

Humanity Concepts & Art concepts:​ Culture, 3D composition, technique (sculpting, 3D printing, painting), tradition

Enduring understandings:​ Artists can connect culture and traditions to architecture to express their understanding of unique regions’ characteristics by exploring 3D art forms.​

Key Skills: â€‹Students will be able to recreate a ceramic environment based on a region in the world. The students will do research on the region they choose, gathering information on the climate, architecture, and cultural influence.

Critical content: Students will research and become knowledgeable about their own region and the architecture in said region

Students will KNOW how to effectively navigate and 3D model with Tinkercad, build a ceramic environment that holds said house, and will know how to paint the house and the environment together in a way that makes sense.

Sequence Two

BIG IDEA:​

Lesson Title:​ Claymation for Communities

Grade level:​ 7th & 8th

Lesson Length (days or hours):​ 7 days, 10 hours

Lesson description: The students create a storyline about the community around them. Creating a stop motion short film with characters made from clay. ​Learn how to combine clay and technology to create their own story and mini film. 

Humanity Concepts & Art concepts: Students will be able to bring their ideas of diversity and inclusion can create a positive unified community.

Enduring understandings:​ Artists can work collaboratively in groups with their peers to explore concepts of community by combining technology and 3D works.

Key Skills: 
Students can engage with artist examples to understand stop motion.

Students can use clay and technology to capture a stop motion film.

Critical content:

Students will know how to work collaboratively on a project.

Students will understand the process of claymation.

Students will know how to visually represent a story and convey it clearly.

Students can identify communities they are a part of and community stories to develop the concept for their project.
